About the Venue

California Speedway opened in June 1997 and is built on the site of an old steel mill more than 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. In an effort to bring a major speedway to Southern California, construction started on the speedway in November 1995.

In its short history, the California Speedway has seen several expansion projects. In December 1997, the speedway, seeing it’s potential popularity began an expansion project of reserved grandstand seating along front stretch. An additional 15,777 seats are added to bring the total to 86,439 reserved seats. Expansion came again November of 2000 with the construction of an additional 5,875 grandstand seats located near turn four. An additional elevator tower is also constructed. Permanent seat capacity now stands at 92,000.

The mild Southern California climate and great track surface makes the California Speedway home to several race and testing events throughout the year, including all NASCAR series and IRL.
