Tony Stewart leaving Gibbs RacingTony Stewart is expected to be released Wednesday from his contract with Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of the season, freeing the two-time NASCAR champion to purchase his own race team. Stewart's contract runs through the 2009 season, but he was reluctant to commit to the extension Gibbs officials have been pushing for since last summer. He instead explored free agency, where numerous options were presented to Stewart ranging from ownership to seats driving for other top teams. Mike Arning, a spokesman for Stewart, said an announcement concerning Stewart's future would be made Wednesday. ESPN.com reported late Tuesday night he would be released from his contract. Assuming Stewart does buy Haas-CNC, he'll re-establish his long relationship with Chevrolet. The partnership was partially fractured this season when Gibbs moved to Toyota. General Motors continued to sponsor the sprint cup teams that Stewart also owns. Stewart is expected to gut the organization and bring in his own people, including a second driver. Fellow Indiana native Ryan Newman is among those rumored to be in line to join Stewart's team next season.  (From AssociatedPress.com)

Tony Stewart driving the No. 5?Theories are already starting to fly around who will fill Casey Mears' spot in the No. 5 at Hendrick next year.  Here's an interesting article from ESPN.com about the possibility of Tony Stewart moving over to Hendrick from Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota.

Tony Stewart said Friday the new opening at Hendrick Motorsports could affect his decision about where he drives next season.

Hendrick Motorsports announced that Casey Mears would not return in the No. 5 Chevrolet.

"There's no one in the garage area that's not going to look in that direction," Stewart said. "You've got to look at it. Absolutely."

Tony Stewart at Eldora SpeedwayWith threatening skies most of the day, the rain stayed away long enough to run the 4th Annual Prelude to a Dream at the half-mile Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.  Kevin Harvick started the race on the pole, but Tony Stewart passed him and outside pole-sitter Matt Kenseth, on the first lap and never looked back.  Stewart won the event with Robby Gordon finishing second, 1.5-seconds back.  After the race, a relieved Stewart said about the rain, ""I'm probably going to die of ulcers. This has not been a week that's been kind from a nerves standpoint.  I'm just thankful we got it in."  This is Stewart's second win in the event's four year history.

Here are the complete results: 1) Tony Stewart, 2) Robby Gordon, 3) Clint Bowyer, 4) Kenny Wallace, 5) Denny Hamlin, 6. (2) Matt Kenseth, 6)Matt Kenseth, 7)Kevin Harvick, 8) Jimmie Johnson, 9) Ken Schrader, 10) Kyle Busch, 11) David Reutimann, 12) Ryan Newman, 13) Red Farmer, 14) Jeff Gordon, 15) Cruz Pedregon, 16) Ray Evernham, 17) Ron Capps, 18) Carl Edwards (18, Mechanical), 19) Aric Almirola (16, Mechanical), 20) Dave Blaney (11, Mechanical), 21) J.J. Greg Biffle moving over to Joe Gibbs Racing?

Tags: joe gibbs racing, tony stewart, greg biffle

Here is an interesting article from ESPN.com discussing the possible fit between Joe Gibbs Racing and Greg Biffle (if, and when, Tony Stewart) leaves.

JGR has developmental driver Joey Logano in the wings, but he's not ready for a Cup ride and is likely better suited for an expansion to four teams in 2010. Biffle would be the perfect bridge and could help the team transition into its post-Stewart days.

His departure could also help solve the car-count problem for Roush, who must get down to four teams by the end of the 2009 season. Edwards re-upped, Jamie McMurray has a long-term deal, Matt Kenseth doesn't appear to be going anywhere and second-year driver David Ragan is an emerging star who cracked the top 12 after his fifth-place run at Darlington. Tony Stewart to run Carolina 500 at Rockingham

Posted by Mike on Friday, May 02, 2008
Tags: tony stewart, richmond raceway

Tony Stewart is scheduled to wave the green flag for the Carolina 500 ARCA race at Rockingham Speedway on Sunday at noon. That gives the NASCAR star maybe 12 hours or so to get a little rest and cover nearly 270 miles to Rockingham, N.C., after he leaves Richmond International Raceway tomorrow night -- if that race ends on time. Stewart will be among the favorites in tomorrow night's NASCAR Sprint Cup event at RIR. Like Stewart, Ken Schrader will be hoping there are no delays at RIR. He is entered to race at Richmond and Rockingham. (From InRich.com)

Tony Stewart leaving Joe Gibbs Racing?

Tony Stewart moving to Haas CNC Racing? Here is a pretty shocking article from SportsIllustrated.com that says that it is all-but-done that Tony Stewart will be leaving Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of the season to join Haas CNC Racing.  Apperently, Tony will recieve partial ownership of Haas CNC Racing (who gets engines -- and some say much more -- from Hendrick Motorsports) and will most likely drive the No. 66.  Here is more from the article:

As one source told me, it's not that Stewart's unhappy or that there's internal dissension; it's that he's in need of a new challenge. Gibbs and Stewart will be friends for life, but they've been together for a decade, and some type of change is in order. Hendrick's organization also has proven to be one of the best organized, from top to bottom. With inside access to the team through their relationship with Haas CNC, Stewart can acquire the tools he needs to build a program as he sees fit.

There's no word on whether Home Depot or crew chief Greg Zipadelli will follow Stewart to his new venture; decisions on those moves will surely come within the next few months. For the time being, though, Stewart will focus on winning a third title with the Gibbs program, which currently has all three of its cars ranked in the top 7 in the point standings. Winless so far this season, Stewart is still a viable title threat; and with five top 10s in eight starts, he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. (From SportsIllustrated.com)

Longtime sponsor The Home Depot will adorn the quarterpanels of the No. 20 Toyota, while SUBWAY will have signage on the rest of the car.

"We’re proud to have SUBWAY Restaurants as a partner with Joe Gibbs Racing, and it’s great to see them become even more involved with racing and our team,” said J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing. “Just as Home Depot has done a really good job of activating its sponsorship over the years, SUBWAY is doing an equally good job of using racing to market its line of fresh fit or better-for-you meals.
