Stewart leaving Gibbs Racing

Tony Stewart leaving Gibbs RacingTony Stewart is expected to be released Wednesday from his contract with Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of the season, freeing the two-time NASCAR champion to purchase his own race team. Stewart's contract runs through the 2009 season, but he was reluctant to commit to the extension Gibbs officials have been pushing for since last summer. He instead explored free agency, where numerous options were presented to Stewart ranging from ownership to seats driving for other top teams. Mike Arning, a spokesman for Stewart, said an announcement concerning Stewart's future would be made Wednesday. ESPN.com reported late Tuesday night he would be released from his contract. Assuming Stewart does buy Haas-CNC, he'll re-establish his long relationship with Chevrolet. The partnership was partially fractured this season when Gibbs moved to Toyota. General Motors continued to sponsor the sprint cup teams that Stewart also owns. Stewart is expected to gut the organization and bring in his own people, including a second driver. Fellow Indiana native Ryan Newman is among those rumored to be in line to join Stewart's team next season.  (From AssociatedPress.com)

Subway Fresh Fit 500 at PIR - Notes

Phoenix International RacewayPole: Ryan Newman 133.457 mph
Outside pole: Elliott Sadler 133.412 mph

"I know it's just qualifying and not the race, but we needed this," Sadler said. "We needed a good run today. We had such a bad week in Texas."

Didn't qualify: Kyle Petty, John Andretti.

Johnny Sauter, who took over for Jeremy Mayfield in the No. 70 earlier this week and needed to get in on time, qualified 42nd.

Drug testing has been the big news is off the track at Phoenix.  Here are some driver comments:

“I don’t feel like I race with guys on drugs, but at the same time, there are certain people you wonder about some times,” Kasey Kahne said. “I definitely wondered about Aaron Fike the last year he was in Nationwide or whatever he was racing. I always wondered. I really had no clue why he raced as long as he did.”

“I guess that shows you can be naive; I was naive,” Mark Martin said. “I didn’t think that was ever really a problem or would be an issue. I’m a race car driver and I would have no desire of racing a car or driving a race car with any sort of impairment at all.”

“What I think NASCAR should do is schedule the drivers’ meeting an hour early some week and, right as we come out of the drivers’ meeting, just test everybody,” Greg Biffle said. “And then it would be cut and dry. No ifs, ands or buts about it.”

Newman docked 25 points for Texas infraction

NASCAR has issued penalties and fines to the No. 12 team that competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions found last Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway.

The No. 12 car driven by Ryan Newman was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock-car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 12.8.1C (right-rear quarter panel height did not meet the required specification; too high in post-race inspection) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book.

As a result, Newman and car owner Roger Penske have been penalized 25 championship driver and 25 championship owner points, respectively. Crew chief Roy McCauley has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

"We had an issue in post-race inspection on Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. It is always our intention to follow NASCAR's rules, and we regret this mistake," Penske Racing South's vice president of operations Michael Nelson said in a statement. "We look forward to getting back to the track this week and are focused on having a strong run in the No. 12 Alltel Dodge at Phoenix International Raceway."

The penalty drops Newman from eighth to 10th in the Sprint Cup standings, with 876 points and now 189 points behind leader Jeff Burton. (From Nascar.com)

Notes - Samsung 500 at Texas

Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway-Dale Jr. had a decent finish, but couldn't do better than 12th. “It was frustrating,” Earnhardt said. “We just chased the handling of the car all day, we had it too tight there at the end.”

-Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin touched coming out of turn 4 on the last lap. Bowyer, who was going for a top-5 finish, hit the wall, but was able to save the car and finished 10th. “Clint just pinched me up there on the final lap,” Hamlin said. “I had to turn left or I’d have gone into the wall. There was no place to go.”

“(Hamlin’s car) clipped us in the right rear, and that was it,” Bowyer said.

-Ryan Newman failed the postrace inspection Sunday. It was determined that the right rear of the car was too high. NASCAR will announce any resulting penalties this week.

-Jamie McMurray finished 14th, and is now well inside the top-35 in points (26th).  This is second five-position jump in the points after finishing eighth at Martinsville.

-Sam Hornish Jr. moved up two spots to 34th and is guaranteed a spot in Saturday's race at Phoenix International Raceway.

-Hornish's gain is Mayfield's loss, the two drivers switched places with Jeremy Mayfield falling out of the top 35.

-David Reutimann finished 41st. He dropped another spot to 38th in points, and will have to qualify on time again at Phoenix.

-Greg Biffle took the biggest hit in the point standings. He lost six spots (to 9th) in the standings after starting the race 16th, and finishing 39th, 27 laps down (mechanical problems).

-Jeff Burton maintains his points lead after finishing sixth.

-Matt Kenseth decided to not pit for fresh tires during the final caution, and was passed shortly after green by Jeff Burton and Tony Stewart, and finished ninth.

"When you're the first one on old tires and everybody's got new tires behind you, they're going to eat your lunch," Kenseth said. "It was a 50-50 call, and we were right in the middle, and we tried it and it didn't work."

-Denny Hamlin's postrace interview session on pit road lasted just 41 seconds before he nearly passed out from dehydration, and was taken to the infield care center. "I'm feeling much better now," Hamlin said at the center. "It really hit me when I got out of the car. I was dizzy and just needed to sit down."
