Ryan NewmanJust like the most of the Sprint Cup guys, this was a free weekend...so you might have noticed that there were no blog posts for a couple of days. My wife and I went to the Bahamas to enjoy some R&R among other things and just got back to Denver this weekend.  I wouldn't even have said anything except for the fact that I ran into Ryan Newman while on my way to dinner.  I didn't talk with him much as I didn't want to disturb his vacation too much (and we were already late for dinner).  Just asked for a picture with him and got on my way.  He was very nice and courteous and had no problem posing with me.

Wine Enthusiast has voted Childress Vineyards as one of America’s Top 25 Tasting Rooms! They were the only winery selected in the state of North Carolina. The May issue of the magazine features a photo of the Tasting Room and describes them as follows:

Those who think NASCAR and world-class wine don’t pair well haven’t been to Childress Vineyards and the speedily improving Yadkin Valley. Founded by NASCAR team owner Richard Childress in 2004, the winery and tasting room have quickly become a stand-alone destination in the Yadkin Valley American Viticultural Area. Go for the Signature Tasting to reveal winemaker Mark Friszolowski’s best work to date. The Reserve Syrah and the Signature Meritage are both sublime, as is the setting – a stone and stucco building, terra-cotta style roof and large tasting room, shop and The Bistro restaurant, all reminiscent of Tuscany. Martinsville Home Race Renters

What are some local Martinsville residents doing this race weekend?  Renting out their homes to race fans.  Lindsey Henley, a local reporter, talks with Yvonne Givens of Race Lodging, LLC about renting out their homes to race fans.

“It allows the homeowner to make a little extra money, and the race fan gets a chance to stay somewhere they feel secure,” Givens said.

“The homeowners don’t have to claim it as a part of their income tax, because there’s a federal loophole that says up to 14 nights you don’t have to claim it,” she said.
